Make MY Beer YOUR Beer

The inspiration for this month’s shirt comes from MY Beer, which according to the can we sourced, was brewed by it’s namesake MY Beer Brewing in Omaha, Nebraska.

The state of Nebraska has a rich brewing history, dating back to the mid 1800s and continuing as a strong industry today.

Despite the state enacting prohibition of alcohol in 1917, years before the nationwide order, some breweries never skipped a beat. Though Nebraska was a dry state, the city of Omaha was known as a brewery town through and through. The city advocated for alcohol to be inexpensive and easily available. Therefore, Omaha housed multiple breweries, including four popular locations in particular – Metz, Krug, Storz and Willow Springs Distillery (which later became the third largest distillery in the nation before the Great Depression).

Even though prohibition laws were passed, alcohol production in Omaha didn’t cease. These industries were protected by Tom Dennison – who was a known political figure at the time. Therefore, breweries in Omaha didn’t have to hide, and their popularity actually increased. By 1929 (remember that widespread prohibition was enacted from 1920-1933), there were over 1,500 places to drink freely in Omaha.

However, despite our searching and researching, we cannot find anything specific to MY Beer Brewing Co. in Nebraska. The best we can do is tell you that at some point the brew was acquired by Walter Brewing Co. and produced at its Pueblo, CO location in the 1960s. Both companies used the same ultra fun artwork on their cans, and if you are lucky enough to find one in good condition today, it would easily net you $200-$250.
